Happy Independence Day!

IN CONGRESS, July 4, 1776.

The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America,

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.–That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, –That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.–Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.

He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.
He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.
He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.
He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.
He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.
He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the Legislative powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.
He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.
He has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary powers.
He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.
He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance.
He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.
He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power.
He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:
For Quartering large bodies of armed troops among us:
For protecting them, by a mock Trial, from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States:
For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world:
For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent:
For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by Jury:
For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences
For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies:
For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws, and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:
For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.
He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.
He has plundered our seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.
He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation.
He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.
He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.

In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.

Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our Brittish brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace Friends.

We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do. And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.

Happy Mother’s Day

Yesterday I sang at the wedding of a young lady who I knew as a child. She was kind of a wild child back then, so it was amazing to see her all grown up and crying as she said her vows. She is so different from the child that I knew.

As she walked down the aisle, I got teary eyed, as I usually do at weddings. I think that since I’ve become a mom, it hits a lot closer to home. I imagined what it will be like 20 or so years in the future when LG walks down the aisle in her fancy white dress and promises to love, honor and cherish. To think about giving my baby girl away to someone else is tough. I wonder what my mother thought when she watched me walk down the aisle. I wish I could ask her, but I think I will have a pretty good idea some day in the future.

Sometimes it feels like being a mom is all about letting go. You carry this baby in your womb, and then your body lets it go. You watch her take her first steps. Spend her first night away from you. Take her to kindergarten. Send her to college. Watch her get married. And become a parent. Always letting go just a little more.

And yet…you never really let go. Because once you become a mother, even when the cord is cut and that baby is no longer physically attached to your body, there is an invisible cord that remains. And you feel every hurt, every tear, every joy, every sorrow, every failure, every triumph. Forever that baby is a piece of your heart that just happens to live outside of your body. And you are both happier and more afraid to lose something than you’ve ever been or ever will be again.

And that is motherhood.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers in my life - those that were, those that are, and those that will be.

Growling and Dyeing

Thursday LG and I went to Target to get some candy for the church’s Easter egg hunt. (Of course, I bought several more things because it is impossible for me to just buy what I went in there for.) I told her she had to ride in the cart and she was not happy with me, so she “growled” at me. I told her that “we do not growl at people”. “But Melody growls,” she said. Good point, but Melody is a dog, LG is a girl, so no growling.

This continued throughout the day - LG growling whenever things didn’t go her way and me reminding her that “we don’t growl”. It did finally sink into her head by the end of the day and the growling went away.

Last night at dinner, Mike said or did something that irritated me, and I reacted with a “grrrr”. LG said, “Mama! Don’t growl!” Gotta love it. Called on the carpet by a three year old. ;)


Yesterday was LG’s first experience with dyeing Easter eggs. She pronounced it “fun” and after we had dyed our dozen eggs, Mike used the rest of the dye to make tie dye t-shirts. I have no idea how well they will hold up to washing and wearing, but it was pretty fun. Here are some pictures…

All the Celebratin’ You Could Ask For

Okay, so! I thought I wasn’t going to be able to get to this post until later tonight or tomorrow, but due to unfortunate circumstances (i.e. Marlene having a sick kiddo or two and hopefully the puke stops there), what I was going to be doing tonight got postponed to a later date. No idea what the later date is, but we’ll try and work it out at some point!

Hello 2008!

Last night, I let LG stay up until midnight to ring in the new year with me since Mike had to work (as usual - life in a band). She had taken a good long nap during the day since I advised her that doing so would make it easier for her to stay up late. (Not that she really “gets” the whole new year thing - she thinks we’re going to look for eggs on the playground at church today…lol…but she actually took my advice, so whatever works.) She started drooping a bit at 11:30, but a clean pull-up woke her up a bit, and she made it all the way to midnight. We toasted on Dixie cups of sparkling apple cider (and Melody got a doggie treat) and I sang Auld Lang Syne to her (which choked me up for no apparent reason). Then I hustled her off to bed (where she went with little argument) thinking she’d sleep in nice and late this morning. Uh, no. She got up at 8 just like she normally does. Yay. Oh well. We’ll be watching the Rose Parade in a few minutes.

Today also begins another chapter of Project 365. I just finished my first project in October, but after having a couple of months off, I decided I’d try it again, but this time do it for a calendar year, rather than a biological year. Out with the Old, In with the New (Year)

Goodbye 2007.

Part of you was not so good.

Part of you was pretty darned amazing.

All of you was another 365 days that I spent with the two people I love most in the world, not to mention my beloved friends and extended family.

I have a feeling 2008 is going to be amazing. Good stuff is on the horizon! And it’s always nice to feel like you’re getting a fresh start. So, out with the old. In with the new. Tomorrow is not only another day, it’s another year. May it be blessed and happy for my family and for yours.

So. Tired.

We had our end-of-the-year choir party tonight - so much fun! We ate lots of food, made lots of noise, played a really fun game and had a great time. Everyone was gone by 9ish, but I’m still exhausted. Probably because I’ve been going non-stop since around Thanksgiving. Now, all the social obligations are finally out of the way (other than hopefully meeting up with some old friends while one of them is in town for the holidays) - I have nothing left to get ready for, and I’m looking forward to a few days of rest and relaxation. Tomorrow I plan to do pretty much nothing more than I absolutely have to. Next week we have to get ready for Generations, but until then, other than a trip to the cemetery on Saturday (it’s my mom’s birthday) and Mass on Sunday, I’m just going to veg. Tomorrow I might even hang out in bed all day and watch television with LG. And try to get her back on a semi-normal schedule.

It Has Been a Very Merry Christmas

And a very interesting one as well. LG decided about a week ago that she didn’t “need any pwesents” and every time we brought up the whole “Santa’s coming to visit” thing, she would have a mini-meltdown. But, knowing that three year olds are nothing if not fickle, we went on about our business and told her if she didn’t want her presents, Mommy and Daddy would play with them instead. However, I did coax her into opening a present last night, and she was quite pleased with the red Christmassy jammies inside and wanted to put them on right away. A step in the right direction!

This morning when she woke up, she came out to the living room and saw the Santa gifts (that she had requested) under the tree and had a meltdown. But we remained calm. We had already discussed our plan of action, you see, so we just calmly went about our business. She didn’t want her stocking, so Daddy got his stocking and found white chocolate Reese’s inside. Half a Reese’s later, she decided she might like to look at her stocking. And found all kinds of wondrous things in there. And then she thought she might like to look at her Santa gifts. And then she thought she might like to open her presents. And it seems that getting presents wasn’t so bad after all. ;)

Mike and I don’t really exchange gifts at Christmas anymore, since our anniversary is in less than a month, but it’s more about her right now anyway, so that’s perfectly okay. I’m sure it will change in the years to come, but for the time being, that’s what works for us.

I did get an amazing Christmas gift this year, though. I got to hear my creation brought to life. It brought tears to my eyes, not only because it was sung beautifully by Marlene, but because it was sort of like giving birth. I nurtured it and molded it into something I was pleased with and then let it loose upon the world. Maybe it’s more like your child becoming an adult than giving birth, I don’t know, but either way, it was an amazing feeling. And it was even better that it touched people’s hearts.

So thank you to Marlene who inspired the song and brought it to life and to Mike without whom my songs wouldn’t ever become more than lyrics and a melody line. And who knows? Maybe some day you’ll hear it on a radio near you. ;)

My life has been truly blessed this year. I hope yours has as well. Merry Christmas to all of you who read this blog.

Almost Done

I really wanted to be done and not have to go out today, but I forgot a couple of things, so I have to make a Target run this morning. Then it’s all about cooking. I need to make potato candy like I did last year, but that might have to wait until tomorrow since you are not supposed to make it when it’s overcast/humid/etc. And it’s supposed to be partly cloudy today and totally sunny tomorrow. So we’ll see.

Edited to add: One should always check one’s list before one goes shopping. Because if you don’t, you forget you have to buy pantyhose (which is understandable since I wear pantyhose only once or twice a year at the most, but still…). And you get home feeling so proud of yourself because you are done! And you don’t have to go out anymore! And then you look at your list! And see you forgot something important! Gah! So, Mike says I can run out when he gets home from work and is unloading/loading his truck. I think Walgreen’s will do the trick. Anyone wanna go buy me some pantyhose? *sigh*

Monday I’ll make a red velvet cake (with my caffeine free cocoa because I have to have some chocolate already) and the lovely pureed butternut squash I made for Thanksgiving. Probably the only one who will eat it besides me is my mother-in-law, but that’s fine. More for me! Ha!

Monday evening is Christmas Eve Mass and Mike also has to do midnight Mass. Christmas Day he has a late morning Mass and then his parents and grandpa come over for dinner. So it should be a lovely holiday. Oh and don’t forget that we have Mass on Sunday as well. Sunday, Monday, Tuesday. Three days in a row of masses. Although, I’m only doing two of them. Ah well.

I hope to post more this weekend, but you never know.

Practice Makes Perfect

Tonight we had our rehearsal for Christmas Eve mass. I really love our choir. It is filled with really nice people and there is no drama. Just smiling and laughter and joy. Well, okay, our lovely bass girl was bummed out that we are not doing her favorite song, but that type of drama is understandable. It comes from passion about music, and that is something I get.

But otherwise, it’s just really nice to sing and make music with people that I enjoy being around.

And the best part? Well, I haven’t mentioned it yet, but I wrote a Christmas song that Marlene will be singing right before Mass starts. As they rehearsed, I just sat with my eyes closed…listening…taking it all in…and hearing my creation brought to life. It was an amazing feeling. It’s interesting, because I’m a singer, too, as you may know, but with this song…I am content just to experience it…just to listen. And my heart is full.

Time Out

I woke up at 4 am and my mind started racing…”oh my gosh, I don’t have a single Christmas decoration up yet besides an empty tree; we haven’t taken pictures for the Christmas cards and I still have to get those all mailed out; the dishes aren’t done; the laundry isn’t done; I have no idea when or even if I’m going to get any holiday baking in; I still have gifts to buy; I have gifts that I bought that have to be wrapped; and good grief, the entire weekend is already spoken for”. Christmas Meme

I’m feeling grumpy about some family stuff today, but I can’t really rant about it, so I’ll just leave you with this meme which I got from Jen at Never a Dull Moment

Wrapping Paper or Gift Bags?

Usually wrapping paper at Christmas, but I use gift bags for pretty much everything else unless it’s a little one who likes to tear the paper.

Real tree or artificial?

I cannot stand fake trees (no offense to those of you who have them - differences are what makes the world go round), and I love Noble Firs. If we could get a live Noble Fir here, I’d be all over it, but we can’t so we get a cut tree every year.

When do you put up the tree?

After LG’s birthday, but before New Year’s Day.

When do you take the tree down?

Depends when we put it up.

Do you like eggnog?

Not particularly. I prefer hot cider.

Favorite gift received?

I honestly cannot come up with an answer to this. Perhaps my brain is too foggy from illness.

Do you have a nativity scene?

No. Does that make me a bad Catholic? Oh well.

Hardest person to buy for?

My husband because he always tells me not to get him anything or his answer to the question “what do you want” is “I don’t know” because when he needs something he buys it.

Easiest person to buy for?

Little Girl of course!

Worst gift you ever received?

A gift is a gift, so it’s the thought that counts, right?

Mail or email Christmas cards?

Mail. It’s the only time I communicate with certain people, so it would be rude to send email, besides the fact that a lot of the people on my list do not have email that I’m aware of. It doesn’t hurt to spend a little time and effort at Christmastime. The rest of the year is fine for email. Christmas is not.

Favorite Christmas movie?

Oooh, toughie. I’ll say…It’s a Wonderful Life

When do you start shopping for Christmas?

Usually after LG’s birthday is over. I’ve got to start earlier, though. I drive myself nuts.

Have you ever recycled a Christmas present?

Not that I can remember.

Favorite thing to eat at Christmas?

Fudge. But I can’t eat that anymore. *sniffle*

Clear lights or colored on the tree?

Colored. Clear on the house though.

Favorite Christmas Song?

Travel at Christmas or stay home?

Stay home where it’s warm and the sun is shining.

Can you name all of Santa’s reindeer?

Without even looking them up: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donder, Blitzen, and Rudolph of course!

Angel on top of the tree or star?

Must be an angel. We always had an angel when I was a kid, and on our after-Christmas shopping trip a few weeks before Mike and I got married, I found a beautiful porcelain angel. I wasn’t going to get it, but I kept going back to it and my (future) mother-in-law told me I should get it. So I did, and I love it.

Open the presents on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning?

Usually Christmas morning.

Most annoying thing about this time of year?

Too much to do, too little time.

What I love most about Christmas?

The chance to give back to those we love. And the music.
