I Chose Sleep

Filed under: Baby Girl, Parenthood — Karin at 3:17 pm on Friday, February 29, 2008

Updated Saturday morning to add: We used the humidifier last night, and she only woke up one time and that was before I went to sleep. So it apparently helped. Thank goodness.

As I mentioned the other day, LG is sick. Her fever is gone, but she’s got this lovely runny stuffy nose. You know the kind. Where the beautiful darling child has runny nose all over face and you have to wash it every 10 minutes because she a) refuses to blow it and/or b) forgets to wipe it.

Last night, she had the worst night of sleeping I think she’s had in her entire life. It was not a bowl of cherries for Mike and me either. She’d wake up every couple of hours or so screaming and crying because she just couldn’t get comfortable and breathe. And who can blame her? I hate having stuffy noses, but at least in my old age I know how to manage to find myself a position where I can get a little air through at least one of my nostrils, thereby not requiring me to breathe through my mouth all night.

It doesn’t help that she doesn’t like to sleep on a pillow, which would elevate her head a bit and maybe just maybe make it easier for her to breathe. But try telling that to a half asleep pissed off three year old. Does not work too well.

Needless to say, none of us got much sleep last night. Even though Mike ended up being the one who got up and went to her because he did a better job soothing her than I did last night (hey whatever works), the crying still woke me up. So every time she woke up, so did we. And then she woke up for good at 7 a.m. Yay. Mike managed to sleep a couple more hours after that, but I didn’t.

Awhile ago, she was playing in her room and all of a sudden I noticed it was quiet. I started calling her, asking her where she was, what she was doing, and to ANSWER ME RIGHT NOW! She didn’t answer, so I had to investigate. And this is what I found:

She Fell Asleep That Way

I contemplated moving her, but then I thought, what the heck? 1) She’s sleeping peacefully. 2) She can probably breathe better that way. And 3) She’s only three years old so the position will not make her body hurt nearly as much as it would mine. A nap is a nap is a nap, right?

By the way, I went to Target first thing this morning and got her a humidifier (thanks for the suggestion Rochelle!), so I’m hoping that will help her sleep a little better tonight. *Crossing fingers*

Updated to add: An hour or so later and she’s on the floor with her legs under bed. But she’s still asleep and goodness knows she needs the sleep!

The Randomness that Is My Life Lately

Filed under: Random Thoughts — Karin at 11:02 am on Wednesday, February 27, 2008

• I’ve been stressed. Not sure why, but I have been. It manifested in me being really short of breath and having tightness in my chest. I was convinced something was wrong with my heart again, until it dawned on me that those were symptoms of anxiety. After I realized that, the symptoms abated a lot.

• The one good thing that came out of all of that was that it kicked my butt into going to see a new primary care physician so I could establish myself as a patient and not have to stress if I need a referral to a specialist anymore. That appointment was this morning, and other than the fact that he wants to do bloodwork (ugh!), it went well. If the bloodwork comes back okay, I don’t need to see him for 4-6 months. So we’ll see how that goes.

• LG has a fever today. I can’t really figure out where she would have picked up a bug because she hasn’t really been around anyone other than her grandparents and us this week. She was coughing a bit yesterday, though, and Mike has had a bit of “allergies”, so maybe it was actually a cold in disguise. Don’t think it’s the flu, though, thank goodness.

• I haven’t been posting as much over here, but I have been posting a daily reflection over here for the Lenten season. And I’ve also been posting a daily photo over here for Project 365.

Note to Self

Filed under: Adventures in Housekeeping — Karin at 5:00 pm on Monday, February 25, 2008

Dear Self,

Remember several weeks ago how you managed to gather the dvr remote control up along with the sheets and wash it and not realize you had done so until you were putting the sheets in the dryer? And remember how it didn’t work at first and you were totally devastated because you only had one remote control that would work the dvr? But then somehow it dried out and Mike managed to get it to work again? And remember how you promised yourself you’d never do that again? Ahem.

Well, at least this time you realized it not too long after you’d started the washing machine and it only got a little wet. I can’t say the same for the laundry room floor, though.

Photo Essay: The Weed Jungle

Filed under: Photo Essay — Karin at 10:23 am on Monday, February 25, 2008

Sunday seems to be the day we spend time in the back yard. This week it was Mike pulling the overgrown weeds that have taken over Melody’s dog run and our path to the big yard. You can tell we’ve gotten a good amount of rain this winter by the amount of weeds we have. They do make everything nice and green, though! (Read on …)

Ten Things You’ll Never Hear Me Say

Filed under: Nothing Better To Do — Karin at 10:40 pm on Tuesday, February 19, 2008

Jen tagged me for 10 things you’ll never hear me say and even though I don’t always have time to respond to tags, I’ll give this one a shot since I seem to be lacking for blog material lately anyway. :)

1. Hey honey, if we get pregnant again, I’d really love to have triplets.

2. I think I’ll vote for Barack Obama.

3. I think I’ll vote for Hilary Clinton.

4. I’m changing my party affiliation to Democrat.

5. Chocolate? Who needs chocolate?

6. Let’s get a cat.

7. I think I’d like to try bungee jumping.

8. I can’t wait until July. I love the heat so much.

9. You want to hire a cleaning company? Why would you do that when I love to clean soooo much!

10. Don’t worry honey, I’ll do the dishes tonight and every night from now on.

Those who know me in real life are probably laughing themselves silly over some of those. ;)

I won’t tag anyone, but if you want to give it a shot, feel free!

Guardian Angels Come in All Forms

This week, they are ripping the carpet out in our church in order to replace it - something that is long overdue. While everything is out, Mike decided it was a good time to do a little remodeling in the choir area to make it more user friendly - as in mic cables underneath the floor instead of all over the floor so you have to step over them and constantly push them out of the way. It’s going to be great.

Anyway, Mike, along with our drummer and two other guys, was in there yesterday doing the demo to the choir area - ripping out the tile, tearing out the tile board, etc. etc.

Our drummer, bless him, decided to do some exploring. They crawled under the altar. They climbed up into the attic. And in the attic, he found there were some broken trusses (near the back of the church for those of you who actually go there). The ceiling has been sagging for awhile, and that clearly explains why there is sagging. And fixing broken trusses and a sagging ceiling is something Mike could probably do on his own. But, as he was leaving today, he chanced a look at the roof. And the roof itself is sagging. That is not good. Not. good. Very not good.

But, good that they found it during a week when the church is not being used. Right? And now they can get it fixed posthaste. Scary though. Very scary.

All the Celebratin’ You Could Ask For

Okay, so! I thought I wasn’t going to be able to get to this post until later tonight or tomorrow, but due to unfortunate circumstances (i.e. Marlene having a sick kiddo or two and hopefully the puke stops there), what I was going to be doing tonight got postponed to a later date. No idea what the later date is, but we’ll try and work it out at some point!

Anyway, since I don’t have to finish my frantic house cleaning before people come over since no one is coming over, well…I can tell you about Valentine’s Day! (Read on …)

We had a wonderful day. Mike didn’t have to work at all, so the three of us spent a lot of fun quality time together today. I would tell you more about it, but I’m really tired, so I’ll just leave you with a little montage of pictures from the day and a promise to write more tomorrow or the next day. Hope you all had a great day!
