American Idol Week 2 - Girls on Film

By Karin at 8:37 pm on February 28, 2006

Mixed bag tonight. Some people really surprised me, and not necessarily in a good way.

Katharine McPhee: All in Love Is Fair (Stevie Wonder)
I think what strikes me about her is that if you closed your eyes and listened to her, you’d expect to see a much older person when you opened them. She has a very mature sound for her age. There were a few problems with her vocal, but for the most part…very lovely and she ended on a strong note.

Kinnik Sky: I’m Here for the Party (Gretchen Wilson)
I really enjoyed this performance. She had fun, she showed her personality, she did something pretty unexpected and not safe. Got a little out of breath toward the end.

Lisa Tucker: Who’s Lovin’ You? (Jackson 5)
Not sure what key she was singing in all the time. I really like Lisa, but I’m not really sure about this performance. Just didn’t do it for me.

Melissa McGhee: Why Haven’t I Heard from You (Reba McEntire)
I really love the tone of her voice. It’s very pleasing. She is a fun performer to watch and she did a good solid job this week.

Heather Cox: Hero (Mariah Carey)
She picked a better song to show off her voice tonight. But still not super duper fantabulous.

[And Paula needs to move back to the middle. She is too ditzy to start the comments. There’s a reason she is bookended by Randy and Simon. They actually sound intelligent and concise.]

Brenna Gethers: Let’s Dance (Donna Summer)
Okay although it sort of went with the sassiness of the song, the whole beginning stance with her hand on her hip was just annoying to me. And if you are going to do Donna Summer, you need to at least hit all the notes. It just wasn’t there at ALL. Simon was right. She murdered that song. Blech. And she’s too frigging cocky. She just annoys the heck out of me. I hope she is GONE GONE GONE.

[And what is with Paula getting all negative since she moved to Randy’s seat? What is up with THAT?]

Paris Bennett: Wind Beneath My Wings (Bette Midler)
Okay, this song is one of my favorite songs ever and I’ve performed it many many times including going into the studio with Mike’s band and recording it for our wedding, so I guess you could say I’m an expert on this song. And I have to say that I did NOT like her performance at ALL. She did bizarre things with her voice and she sounded like she was about 12 putting on a show for the adults. Not impressed at all. Bad song choice. Yuck.

Ayla Brown: I Want You to Need Me (Celine Dion)
Strangely enough, I really enjoyed Ayla’s performance a lot more than either Lisa or Paris this week. I think she really came out and delivered tonight. She’s still not, in my opinion, really Idol material, but I think she brought it this week.

Kelly Pickler: Something to Talk About (Bonnie Raitt)
She seemed like she wasn’t quite as nervous this week and it was better. Still not great, but I think she picked a good song for her personality. She lost her key in there somewhere, but luckily she got it back and finished strong.

Mandisa: Cry (Faith Hill)
Interesting song choice, but I think it worked for her. She has a powerful voice, but she knows how to bring it down when she needs to. I like that she put her own spin on this song. Neat performance.

My favorites tonight: Ayla and Mandisa, followed by Kelly and Melissa

Who will leave? Please let it be Brenna. PLEASE. Other than that? Not really sure but I’m thinking Heather is out of here or MAYBE Kinnik.

I wish I knew about all these people…I haven’t been watching it and probably won’t till they are down to the last 4 or 5 or however they do it….So, I didn’t know Paula A. was moved to a different seat….I wonder what the producers are thinking…?

WOW! Looks great! Very green! I could use some green around my life!

I wasn’t all that impressed with any of them. I’m not sure a one of them is that good anymore.

I really like the St. Patrick day festiveness.

My choices were Melissa and Mandisa. Melissa did start out wobbly but pulled it together. I just like Mandisa, she is definitely not afraid to show off and sing and I love that about her. She’s a bigger girl and doesn’t try to hide.

Ayla was good, she’s so TALL! I missed Kelly’s performance though. I have it on DVR though so I’ll watch it tonight before the men sing.

I’m ready for Brenna to be gone.

I think Ayla is my favorite. I didn’t catch all of everyone’s performance, but she stands out for me.
