Am I Wrong Here?

By Karin at 6:58 pm on July 29, 2005

I receive the church bulletin from my parents old church, and in it there is this statement:

Please also continue to pray for a new Supreme Court justice that will uphold God’s laws and the Constitution of the United States of America.”

This statement really bugs me. Whereas I have no problem with people upholding God’s laws and I see no problem with people praying for a Supreme Court justice that they are comfortable with, I don’t think it is the job of a Supreme Court justice to uphold God’s laws. It is certainly their job and their duty to uphold the Constitutuion of the United States and to interpret the law. But this is the United States of America. There is supposed to be separation of church and state. And the Supreme Court is supposed to represent every citizen whether they believe in God or not. So, yeah, this bugs me. Am I wrong here?

Nope. You’re completely with in the realm of reason. Some people just can’t grasp the concept.

Uhh… you think i’m going to disagree with you on this…?

    No siree-maam bob!

I remember you getting pissed off at me around election time for asking people to leave God at home when they vote on things (and I do and did understand the point you were making about me being an a-hole for asking that). I didn’t do a very good job of articulating it then, but I think that above quote was more what I was afraid of and had in mind when I said that. Yes, it’s legal to vote your conscious and beliefs, but it still tends to scare the shit out of me when people start intermingling God and states laws like that. Anyhew, not trying to rehash the old argument, but yes it does bug me.

    …so says the Agnostic w/atheist tendencies :)
